"GAP LAKE, GROTTO POND, AND THE
"OLD CAMP CHANNELS"
ALL ACESSED VIA THE 1A HIGHWAY EAST OF CANMORE WILL
BEGIN TO OFFER RARE OPPORTUNITIES FOR BIG NUMBERS OF LARGE FISH.
EXPECTED RUN-OFF PATTERN SHOULD HAVE THE MAIN CHANNEL
OF THE BOW RIVER EXPERIENCING PERIODS OF CLEARING AND MODERATE FLOWS INTERMITTENTLY
THROUGH THE MONTH OF JUNE.
HOWEVER THE REMAINING SNOW PACK IS CERTAINLY DEEP
ENOUGH TO SUSTAIN AN AVERAGE RUN-OFF PERIOD WHICH WE EXPECT TO PEAK ABOUT THE MIDDLE OF
JUNE, WITH THE RIVER SETTLING DOWN PROVIDE SERIOUS FISHING ON OR ABOUT THE LAST WEEK OF
JUNE.
U.B.R. HATCHES:
P.M.DS (Pale Morning Duns) beginning to show in good numbers. Focus on areas where
back channels or braids meet the main river-watch the seam of where clear water meets
muddy flows.
P.M.Ds expected
to continue through the month of June.
GOLDEN STONE FLIES
should become a factor of major import by the 6th of June or there abouts. Fish
nymph imitations on a sink tip line or using a lead head- weighted nymphs will
suffice. Expect to see adults of this specie by the second week of June. Stimulators in
sizes 12-8 fished bankside to undercuts and presentations to log jams or anchored trees
will yield best results.
GREAT WESTERN GREEN
DRAKES I expect will begin showing lightly by mid June getting progressively heavier by
the end of the month, heralding yet again another tremendous July for this Brown Trout
favourite. Expect to see LESSER GREEN DRAKES and BLUE WINGED OLIVES in good numbers mid
June through the first week of July. MIDGES will continue to be present and an important
food source to Trout throughout the month.
Expect to see
increasing numbers of CADDIS FLIES starting immediately and building through out the month
of June, these will be hugely important to fish in back bater scenarios.
Last on the list for
expected flies of importance during the month will be FLYING ANTS these fellows are
abundant and become available to Trout wherever vegetation overhangs channel sides or is
close to the water, expect to have a lot of ants on the water after rains swell the river
levels, and or following periods of big wind.
